Why silk is the quiet luxury your hair has been waiting for

On pillowcases, scrunchies, and the gentle art of waking up with better hair.

What makes silk different

Silk is a naturally smooth, tightly woven protein fibre. Unlike cotton or linen — which has a rough, absorbent weave — silk creates almost no friction against your hair shaft. This matters more than you might think. Every time you move in your sleep or pull a hair tie through your hair, the outer cuticle layer is either gliding freely or being lifted, snagged, and roughed up. Over time, that damage accumulates: frizz, split ends, breakage, and dull color are all partly the result of daily mechanical stress.

Less breakage

Silk's smooth surface lets hair slide freely, dramatically reducing the snapping and tearing that cotton causes overnight.

Moisture retention

Cotton is absorbent — it pulls moisture from your hair as you sleep. Silk leaves your natural oils and any treatments right where you put them.

Frizz control

Reduced friction means the cuticle stays flat. You'll notice the difference most on wavy and curly hair — mornings become far gentler.

Color longevity

Mechanical damage accelerates color fading. A silk pillowcase is one of the quietest ways to extend the life of your last salon visit.

"Sleep is the longest stretch of time your hair goes without interference — make that environment work for you, not against you."

The most overlooked upgrade in your routine

It's easy to focus on the pillowcase and forget the scrunchie — but the moment you tie your hair up is just as important as where you lay it down. Standard elastics, even fabric-covered ones, grip unevenly and create a concentrated point of tension. Silk scrunchies distribute pressure across a wider, smoother surface. The result is fewer kinks, less pulling at the root, and no crease left behind when you take them out. They're particularly valuable for putting hair up mid-style, sleeping in a loose updo, or protecting a blowout between washes.

What to look for

When choosing a silk pillowcase, look for a momme weight of at least 19–22mm (ours here at Honeydove are 22mm) — this indicates a denser, more durable weave that will hold up to washing. Mulberry silk is the gold standard: the fibres are finer, more uniform, and softer than other varieties. For scrunchies, the same logic applies — a heavier silk fabric will be gentler than a thin, loose weave. Size matters too: a larger scrunchie creates less tension at the tie point. Start with just a pillowcase and one scrunchie for a week. The difference in how your hair feels in the morning is usually enough to make the switch permanent.
