A Guide to Raw Silk

Raw Silk Clothing Is at the Heart of Honeydove

At Honeydove, we work intentionally with raw silk because it aligns with how we believe clothing should feel: comfortable, breathable, and made to last.

Our raw silk is:

  • made from 100% natural silk noil

  • chosen for its soft hand feel and durability

  • thoughtfully sourced from a domestic fabric retailer (who sources fabrics internationally)

  • designed into silhouettes that prioritize comfort and movement

We design with real life in mind — nursing, lounging, working, resting, and everything in between. Raw silk allows us to create pieces that feel elevated yet deeply wearable.

Subtle variations in weave and texture are part of what makes each piece unique.

Raw silk clothing has been at the heart of Honeydove since 2020. We have been offering raw silk dresses, raw silk pants, and raw silk tops for years and were initially drawn to this fiber for its unmistakable coziness.

Raw silk has a texture similar to flannel — softly structured, warm, and comforting — making it an especially lovely fabric for cooler weather, while still remaining breathable enough for year-round wear.

What Is Raw Silk?

Raw silk, often called silk noil, is a natural silk fabric made from the shorter fibers left over after traditional silk production. Rather than being discarded, these fibers are spun into a yarn that creates a matte, softly textured fabric with a subtle, nubby hand feel.

People search for raw silk because it offers the natural beauty of silk with added durability for everyday wear. Raw silk feels cozy and grounded, closer to linen or cotton in wearability, but with the warmth and depth that only silk provides.

It is a textured fabric with small nubs throughout (similar to flannel) and has a beautiful, easy drape.

How Does Raw Silk Differ From Other Silks?

Unlike traditional silk charmeuse or satin, raw silk does not have a shiny or slippery finish. Its beauty lies in its texture and ease.

Raw silk is a matte silk that does not cling to the body. It drapes gently, making it ideal for everyday silhouettes, relaxed fits, and bodies that ebb and flow through seasons of life.

How to Care for Raw Silk

Raw silk is surprisingly low-maintenance when cared for gently.

We recommend:

  • hand wash cold or use a gentle cycle on warm

  • use an all-natural detergent

  • tumble dry low (do not air dry, as the fabric can become stiff)

  • steam or lightly iron on low, if needed

Raw silk becomes softer with time and wear. Subtle variations in texture are part of the fabric’s natural character and should be embraced, not avoided.

Frequently Asked Questions About Raw Silk

Is raw silk breathable?
Yes — raw silk is breathable and naturally temperature-regulating.

Is raw silk the same as silk noil?
Yes.

Do you pre-shrink your raw silk?
Yes. Raw silk can shrink up to 20% on the first wash, so we account for shrinkage during our manufacturing process. All garments are pre-washed before making their way to you and will not shrink further.
